By Hailey ClubineYou never realize how lonely it is to be kept in your house all day, even if that’s what you normally do anyways, until you’re forced to do it. It’s like forcing a child to play with their favorite toy when they want to play with something else. Staying home, being able to have so much free time to catch up on my book list, actually do quality homework for my online class, and have time to spend with my family, has been amazing. However, there is a limit to it.
Over the past week of Spring Break, it was normal. I had a week off school and it was fine. I wouldn’t be doing anything else, anyways. I actually did go out to see my grandfather before the whole isolation and social distancing thing came around, but that was it. Aside from going to school every day, I never really go anywhere else. But it’s the simple fact that I can’t go anywhere that irks me to no end. I’ve had quality time with my family, we played cards for 6 straight hours and had a lot of fun, but that was the extent of what we’ve really done. My parents are both still working, so they’re gone just about each day, and when she gets home from work my mother takes a shower and washes her work clothes. A lot of people could and do have it worse than I do. People who live alone can’t really interact with anyone else except through a screen, and that can get really lonely and isolative. Some people are actually dealing with the COVID-19 disease, unlike my ‘healthy’ self. But this is just my experience. I may not be feeling as miserable as others may be, in fact I am quite decently okay with my current situation, but I still feel sympathy and empathy for those who do have it worse, and are feeling the effects of isolation and distancing more than I am. Through this crazy time in our lives, I have asked the students involved in Mass Media Club if they wanted to write about their time away from class, practices, and what their daily life looks like now. For instance, in my household, my mother is now working from home and I am working on a few of the opportunities that our teachers and coaches have given us for these weeks of no classes. I hope that we are all able to go back to school when we are scheduled to ( April 13th). For now, all we can do is hope for the best and continue to be positive. Students check your email regularly please, and if you can take advantage of the opportunities that our teachers and coaches are giving us, then do! Let’s not have these three weeks be inactive, let’s get up and do something and continue to stimulate our brains and work our muscles! Stay home and stay healthy! Hope to see everyone soon! Devon Hiller (MMC President) 2/16/2020 A Community Helping a Family in NeedBy Emma BlairIf there’s one thing that has always been a strong characteristic of Ogden, it’s the community’s ability to come together and help each other out in times of need. Right now, there is one particular family that has been struggling. Andrew Skinner and his wife just recently had their baby girl, Elliana Grace. She was born November 7, 2019 and is facing a lung transplant. On Monday, February 10, there was a Tip Night held at Pizza Ranch in order to raise some money for the Skinner family. It was super successful, and it was the biggest tip night that Pizza Ranch has ever had! The teachers of OHS did an awesome job of serving everyone who came in! For every adult buffet ordered with one of the coupons, $2 was donated straight to the family. There were also tip jars on the tables for free will donations. At Pizza Ranch alone, there was $4,533.12 raised and 405 tickets turned in! On Tuesday night’s varsity basketball game, there was a bucket pass donation held by the student body. The cheerleaders passed around the buckets during halftime of the boys’ game. The buckets made an additional $350! There have also been many donations made in the office from around town. The overall total amount raised for the Skinner family comes in at $6,200, and there are more donations being brought in every day! Thank you to everyone who grabbed a coupon and came out to support on Monday night or who gave money in one of the various free will donations! Every dollar counts! 2/4/2020 2nd Semester ChangesBy Devon Hiller2nd semester brings a lot of new and exciting things to our high school students but it also comes with some other, not so fun and exciting things. Some new fun things in the Ogden school district include that High school students now get to have personal Chromebooks. Another new addition is that Ogden high-school is now a one-to-one school. This means students get to have a Chromebook to take home and work within the classroom and do homework anytime online. Now that students will have a Chromebook accessible to them at all times this will hopefully reduce the amount of unfinished online homework. So far students seem to enjoy them and are happy the school is taking steps to help further our education. , But, while there are good things, there are always some ad things too! There have been a few new things added to the high school that made students a little unhappy. There is now only one lunch period for all four grades in the high school. In years past the lunch period at the high school was split into two sections, A lunch and B lunch. The change in lunch schedule was brought on by the new addition of a W.I.N. period, (What I Need). The middle school is up at the high school this year, and we have middle school teachers teaching high school classes. Last semester the W.I.N period was split as well as the lunch periods.he middle school had lunch and the high school had W.I.N, and then it would switch, W.I.N for middle school and then 5th period/lunch for the high school. Having middle school teachers teaching high school students found it difficult to help the students that needed to see them in W.I.N if they were at lunch or had to be teaching a class.. Because of these conflicts, the school decided to have the high school students eat at the same time and take away the two-section lunch period. Now the W.I.N period is altogether across the middle school and high school so any teacher is free at any time in case a student needs help. Students are getting used to having lunch together, but it has been a learning curve for the students at OHS. With all of these new changes in the high school, all of the students are hoping for a break from the movement!
1/16/2020 WELCOME BACK OHS STUDENTS!By Hannah Dutcher With the new year we are bringing back the 20’s, and did we start off roaring! We may not have flappers or the Charleston, but many new exciting things are in store for OHS. For the seniors, this is the last semester of their high school career. For underclassmen, they are wrapping up the first experiences of high school. No matter what is at the end of this semester, let’s finish it out strong!
